Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an “A” student to Study Abroad?

No, All students with a 2.5 GPA or above can apply.  It is important to note, however, that most study abroad programs may require a higher GPA.

Do I need to be proficient in another language?

No, There are many programs in foreign countries where you can begin or continue your study of the language.  There are also programs in English speaking countries to study subjects other than language.

If I decide to study abroad, can I still graduate in four years?

Yes, A well-planned program will enable you to take a full load of courses while abroad.   If  you get your courses Pre-Approved for transfer credit, your study abroad semester will replace a semester on campus.

What study abroad programs are available?

You can enroll in any of over 3,000 programs through other US universities and companies.  You determine what you want and find the program that fits your needs. 

Where can I go abroad?

There are many possibilities.  There are programs in just about every country in the world.  Although it is important to find a program that is appropriate for your academic needs.  Explore the "Clickable Map" of the world to find various programs.

When do most students go abroad?

The most popular semester(s) for study abroad is the second semester of your sophomore year or the first semester of your junior year.  For year-long programs, your junior year works best.

How much does a typical program cost? 

In most cases the cost will be higher than your cost at WCU.  While the cost is higher, virtually all of our students who have participated in semester study abroad say it was the best investment they have ever made.

What financial aid is available?

Any student who is interested in studying abroad should meet with Mr. Dana Parker, Director of Financial Aid who will review the guidelines of what types of financial aid apply to study abroad programs.  Even if you do not qualify for financial aid at WCU, it is possible that you may be eligible  for financial aid for study abroad.

When should I begin planning a study abroad semester?

Start now!!!  Keep in mind that it takes about 9-months to a year to go through the process of applying to study abroad.
